Elizabethton Trio Net Wins In Pizza Plus Bracket Series Action
Sunday was a big day for Elizabethton racers Denny Garrison, Mike Gill and Chad Cathell, all of whom earned wins during Pizza Plus Bracket Series action this weekend. Garrison took the Super Pro win, Gill grabbed his second Pro Bike title of the season and Cathell captured the Junior Dragster Division 1 crown for the second time this year. Other winners were Danny Guinn of Blountville in Sportsman, Chelsea Boling of Seymour, Tenn., in Junior Dragster Division 2 and J.R. Bailey of Princeton, W.Va., in Pro. Rain hampered the first half of the weekend doubleheader on Saturday as racers completed only two rounds. All drivers who made it past the second round of eliminations split the purse money in each of their respective divisions. In Sunday Super Pro competition, Garrison and his 1996 Undercover came off the line in .031 seconds with an ET of 5.469 at 126.97 mph to defeat Phil Fleming of Dorton, Ky., and his 1966 Chevy. Fleming posted a .016 reaction time with an ET of 6.836 at 99.78 mph. Bailey¿s 1971 Buick Skylark got the best of Bobby Muncey (Luttrell, Tenn.) and his 1978 Camaro in Pro action. Bailey cut a .074 second light with a 10.191 ET at 69.91 mph to edge Muncey¿s .025 light with an 8.011 ET at 78.15 mph. Guinn¿s 1973 Chevy was the class of the Sportsman field with a .016 light in the finals against Eddie Weaver of Bristol, Va. Guinn posted a 12.122 ET at 106.22 mph while Weaver¿s Dodge cut a .043 light with a 12.773 ET at 106.43 mph. In Pro Bike it was yet another win for Gill and his 1992 Suzuki. Gill knocked off Morristown¿s Scott Lee, who also rode a Suzuki, with a stellar .006 reaction time to go along with a 6.022 ET at 109.52 mph. Lee drew a redlight. Cathell grabbed his win with a .085 light and an elapsed time of 9.331 at 66.68 mph to best Maryville¿s Christi Johnson. Johnson posted .144 light with an 11.568 elapsed time at 54.70 mph. Boling came off the line in .067 seconds with an elapsed time of 8.884 at 70.69 mph to win over C.J. Hodges (Boone, N.C.) who had a .112 light with an ET of 9.513 at 66.31 mph. Bracket action continues on Saturday, May 10. Gates open at noon, time trials are at 2 p.m. and eliminations will start at 6 p.m.
