Birthday Boys Achieved Bristol Milestones
Some mark them on the calendar for celebration. Milestones in making it another year or starting a new one.
Others mark them off the calendar, to be ignored, not to be mentioned. Everyone looks at things differently. It is why police like evidence more than eyewitness accounts. The accounts do not always match.
Birthdays are interesting to me. Maps are too. Maybe because they both mark where we are going or where we have been giving us opportunities to reflect on both.
Just kind of closing eyes and picking a two-week period in January, there are some interesting birthdays … many with connections to Bristol.
Hard to believe this guy turned 55 last week, January 9. Solid as they come, finishing in the top 10 in more than half of his career races, he is a four-time winner at BMS (two Cup, two Nationwide), including an emotional victory in the 1998 Night Race. He missed capturing another win by barely eight inches in spring of 1990.
Brett Bodine, now an official with NASCAR but a two-time Nationwide winner at Bristol in 1985 and '86 had a birthday January 11. His performance led the all-time win leader for car owners at Bristol to use him as a relief driver for an injured Terry Labonte in 1987. Despite the driver change, Labonte/Bodine finished ninth.
Just like Martin and Bodine, January 13, brought the 55-birthday for this guy, winner of one of the most emotional race in Bristol history as the local team, who had been so close for so long, finally broke through.
One of the greatest drivers ever, this guy is 79 - is that right? - January 16. He never ran at BMS as a driver during his career but did field a car seven times as an owner.
As a car owner, Bill Davis, (January 18) gave a boost to many driving careers. He is a three-time Bristol winner, one Nationwide win with the first guy we mentioned and two Camping World Truck wins, one each with Mike Skinner and Johnny Benson, Jr.
So there it is, a brief look at a few January birthdays. Milestones. Stops on the proverbial BMS map. Hope you enjoyed the short ride.
