I just did a web search for the term “Boys Have At It.”  In less than a second, I got 432,000 results (including the above popular YouTube video).  No term in recent NASCAR history has created more conversation and opinion than these four simple words.  If you haven’t heard the term, you’re either not a race fan, or you’ve been in some area of the world where internet, television and radio don’t exist.

Every fan, every blog, every media talking head, every driver, every owner, every NASCAR executive, every track promoter has something to say about BHAI - including last week's comments from NASCAR's Brian France.  Here are some of the things which have been said recently by those involved in the sport:

  • “We’re gonna put it back in the hands of the drivers.”
  •  “I don’t know what is acceptable and what’s not and what’s the penalty.”
  • “If you want us to have at it, where are we limited?”
  • “What does that mean?”
  • “The next WWE?”
  • “I’m mad right now.”
  • “What comes around goes around.”
  • “Going to the NASCAR hauler is not a big deal anymore.”

Hmmmmm.   It seems the “feuds” in our sport sure continue to create a lot of talk right now.  And they seem to be creating some interesting sound bites before, after and between races.  But I have some real questions about how it is really affecting the racing and driving on the track, which I truly don’t know how to answer.

Is it all hype?  I don’t think so, but not sure.

The BHAI does not seem to have done any real “harm” to any of the drivers.  Yeah, tempers have flared and someone could have gotten hurt, but non major injuries or damages so far.  Does that seem right to you?

Seems like we’re all critical of how NASCAR is handling this portion of the racing, but what should they do?  No enforcement of BHAI?  Less enforcement?  Stricter penalties?

So, for now, we speculate, we watch and we wait for the next feud.  Interesting times in our sport, that is for sure.  Soon Charlotte race weeks will be over, then on to Kansas, Pocono, etc.

IF Boys Have At It continues to heat up with the summer swing, can you just imagine what may happen at Bristol.  If you remember, in March Danica got spun out, jumped from her car and walked onto the track with some choice words and gestures.  She won’t be at our little half mile short track in August, but all the boys will be here.  I’m looking forward to following the feuds as they lead into the Night race battle at Bristol.   As a kid from Tennessee sings…. “everything gets hotter when the sun goes down."
