During Bush's Beans Pole Day on Friday, Matt Kenseth earned his first pole this season and second at Bristol Motor Speedway in his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career.

The last time he did that at the .533-mile track, in August 2005, he won the race.

The driver of the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota posted a lap of 128.632 mph in the final 12-car qualifying segment for Sunday's Food City 500, and his effort led a strong showing by JGR.

"Glad we're starting from the pole," Kenseth said. "It's a good place to be in front and hopefully stay up there and out of trouble."

Each of JGR four cars qualified in the top 11. Defending race winner Carl Edwards will start third, Denny Hamlin will start fifth and David Ragan in the No. 18 Toyota will start 11th.

A victory on Sunday would snap what's grown into a 51-race winless streak for Kenseth and be his fourth at Bristol in the Sprint Cup Series.

Starting alongside him Sunday will be Brad Keselowski, who qualified second with a lap of 128.442 mph in the No. 2 Team Penske Ford. Sprint Cup points leader Kevin Harvick qualified fourth in the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet.

Joey Logano, who won here in August, led the first two rounds of qualifying in the No. 22 Team Penske Ford but couldn't nail down the top spot in the final round. His best lap (127.317 mph) put him sixth.

"It's frustrating when you win the first two rounds and then you don't really make it happen on the third one," Logano said. "It's frustrating because you feel like you've got the pole sitting right here, but I just got too loose in the last round."

Kasey Kahne in the No. 5 Chevrolet was the lone Hendrick Motorsports representative to qualify in the top 10. He will start eighth on Sunday. Dale Earnhardt Jr. qualified 13th and Jeff Gordon qualified 23rd. Six-time series champion Jimmie Johnson battled a loose car in qualifying and didn't advance out of the first round. He will start 28th in the No. 48 Chevrolet.

It will be his sixth start outside the top 25 in 27 career Sprint Cup races at Bristol.

"We're in a big hole," Johnson said. "There's no way around it. But this is a long race. You can still salvage a nice finish here being smart, running a strong race and that's what we're going to have to do."
