Kamara and Ekanem seal wins with big plays
Ekanem comes up big in fifth win of the season
Virginia Tech redshirt junior Ken Ekanem has made some big plays, maybe none as big as his game-saving sack in Thursday night's win over Atlantic Coast Conference rival Georgia Tech. On a long third down attempt on the Yellow Jackets' last drive, Ekanem was able to take down quarterback Justin Thomas to push the fourth down to fourth-and-27. In his time with the Hokies, Ekanem has 12 career sacks accounting for 84 yards.
"Emotions were high and a lot was on the line," said Ekanem on the Hokies' win. "We were able to push them back on that last drive. Just a great job by our whole defense. I'm very proud of us, and I'd say we executed well."
The Hokies will look for a strong showing against North Carolina to mark legendary coach Frank Beamer's final home game.
Kamara keeps adding career numbers in win against North Texas
University of Tennessee running back Alvin Kamara has rushed for 508 yards this season, accumulating 127 of those this past Saturday as the Volunteers took the win over North Texas. Saturday's win makes the Vols bowl-eligible for the second straight year.
Kamara put Tennessee on top early, scoring just over a minute into the game on a 27-yard run. Kamara would tack on another score in the fourth to help extend the Vols' lead to 24-0. It was his sixth rushing touchdown and 10th overall in the season.
"We needed him. He did a great job of really making the second-level defender miss and getting the ball north and south," said Coach Butch Jones of Kamara. "He provided a spark for us. That was great to see because we needed that. We needed some momentum plays."
Look for Kamara to add to his number this weekend as the Volunteers take on Southeastern Conference rival the Missouri Tigers.
