Laurel Elementary School in Laurel Bloomery, Tenn., took home the first-place prize of $3,000 in cash while Haynesfield Elementary and Fairmount Elementary, both located in Bristol, Tenn., earned the second and third place prizes of $1,000 and $500 in school supplies from Sharpie.
Schools in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia were invited to take part in the "Racin' Back To School" program. A total of 56 schools took advantage of the offer. The program was directed at students 12 and under who were given free entry into the Wednesday night doubleheader at BMS on Aug. 23.
Winners were determined by the percentage of students who came to the races at BMS on Aug. 23 based on enrollment of students aged 12 and under at each school.
Laurel Bloomery had 6.52 percent of its students take advantage of the free entry while Haynesfield had 5.27 percent attend the races and Fairmount had 5.10 percent of its students in attendance.
