Kyle Busch earned an impressive victory during the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway Sunday afternoon, his second Sprint Cup Series win at The World's Fastest Half-Mile.
Busch led his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin across the line to claim the win. The Las Vegas, Nev. driver was able to keep himself out of trouble throughout the race, something that he said made the win even more gratifying.
"That [avoiding trouble] is what makes it fun to win here," said Busch. "You never know what is going to happen in Bristol. This is a bit of redemption. This track owes me a few, but you can't ask a track to pay you back."
After a mistake in the pit relegated the driver to a sixth-place finish in Saturday's Scotts Turf Builder 300 Nationwide Series race, Busch knew his team would need to perform at their highest to guide him to Victory Lane.
A pit stop near the end of Sunday's race dropped him from second to third and behind Hamlin. When he returned to the track, Busch gave his crew an ultimatum.
"I told the ladies to man up, and they got it done on the next stop," he explained.
"It is pretty awesome to win here. I should have won last fall here. We've had great cars, we just keep ruining it on pit road."
After the victory, car owner Joe Gibbs echoed his driver's comments.
"I like to stay humble and hungry," he said. "I'm just happy we won. This is a tough place to win."
When Hamlin was asked if he would have moved Busch out of the way for the win, his response was simple.
"For sure, he's won too much," said Hamlin.
Defending Sprint Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson finished third, followed by Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne.
Johnson, who has faced his share of challenges at the tricky, Tennessee track, said he was pleased to be within striking distance of a win.
"In some ways," Johnson said, "to be that close to a win and to see the 18 car pull into Victory Lane, I can now see what the leaders do, and I can visualize being in that position someday.
"Before, we were so far off and had some decent runs, but really wasn't in the race, racing for the win. Today we did that. So I'm very proud of all the work."
Pole-sitter Mark Martin finished sixth, with Ryan Newman, Jeff Burton, Juan Pablo Montoya and rookie Marcos Ambrose rounding out the top-10.
