Donny Lia held off a tough field of Whelen Modified competitors to take home the inaugural UNOH Perfect Storm 150 at Bristol Motor Speedway on Wednesday night.
Lia, a former Camping World Truck Series winner, brought home the win over modified ace Ted Christopher after a hard-fought battle late in the going.
Christopher led most of the event, but after the mid-race break at lap 75, Lia began planning his move. Just after lap 100, Lia moved past Christopher.
A late race caution, and a subsequent warning from NASCAR for jumping the start, almost cost Lia the win. He gave the position back to Christopher and then cleanly raced his way back by to claim the lead.
"We were able to fight back around Teddy [after the warning]," said the New York native. "Today was real good for me. I was going at it as hard as I could. This is an awesome race track.
"This is a great run for us."
After the event, Christopher said that lapped traffic added to the difficulty of the race.
"It definitely was interesting," explained Christopher. "Some of the lapped car's spotters must have gone for a hot dog. The lapped traffic was horrible. It was a wild race. It was intense."
The UNOH Perfect Storm was the first race in a mid-week doubleheader at Bristol Motor Speedway. The Camping World Truck Series took to the track after the Whelen Modified Series event.
