As the weather turns cooler and the holiday season fast approaches, Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway prepares to transition from one sport to another, from a concrete surface to the ice.

The Johnson Controls Ice Rink opens for its eighth season Tuesday, Nov. 10 and skaters, particularly younger ones, are counting down the days until they can take to the ice again.

"Every fall we start getting calls from people who want to know when they're going to be able to go skating," said BMS president and general manager Jeff Byrd. "When we opened the rink eight years ago, we had no idea how it would go over, if people would embrace it.

"Before we opened, people had to drive about 90 minutes to find a rink, so from the outset, it has been a tremendous success.  Kids definitely love it, but there are plenty of adults who really enjoy it as well.  The number of people who come out to skate increases each year and it has now become a huge part of the holiday tradition for families. "

The covered rink, which is 60' x 120', is located at the Speedway's main entrance, just off Hwy. 11E (Volunteer Parkway).

The Johnson Controls Ice Rink will be open six days a week, beginning Tuesday, November 10 through January 10.  Tuesday through Thursday, the rink will open from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m.  Friday hours are from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday the rink will be open from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. The cost to skate is $5, plus an additional $2 for skate rental.

The rink's hours will be altered during the holidays, beginning on Thanksgiving Day when it will be open from 4 p.m.-10 p.m. Other special scheduling hours are as follows: Nov. 27-28 (2 p.m.-11 p.m.), Dec. 21-23 (2 p.m.-10 p.m.) Dec. 24 (4 p.m.-10 p.m.), Dec. 26 (2 p.m.-11 p.m.), Dec. 28-30 (2 p.m.-10 p.m.), Dec. 31 (2 p.m.-11 p.m.), Jan. 1 (2 p.m.-10 p.m.) and Jan. 8 (4 p.m.-10 p.m.)
