Friday The 13th Will Be Lucky Night At AutoTrader.com Speedway In Lights As Every 13th Car Will Get In Free
Opening night of the 13th season of Autotrader.com Speedway In Lights Powered by TVA falls on Friday, Nov. 13 this year and that will prove to be lucky for certain visitors.
Every 13th car to come through Speedway In lights on Friday, Nov. 13, will receive free entry into what has become one of the premier holiday shows in the country.
Claudia Byrd, director of the Bristol Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities, is excited about opening Speedway In Lights on Friday the 13th.
"We all know that traditionally there's a great deal of superstition connected to Friday the 13th," she said. "But it can be a good luck day too and that's exactly what it will be for a lot of people who come to Speedway In Lights that first night.
"We've enjoyed a great deal of support from people all over this area for 12 years now and I cannot tell you how much we appreciate it. This is one small way of letting them know how thankful we are that they continue to help us help others."
This year's light show again features a new, dazzling display. Alpha Natural Resources, the country's third largest producer of coal, will introduce the "Coal Mountain Gift Mine" display to Speedway In Lights. The animated exhibit is 70 feet long and 22 feet tall and features a continuous miner tossing presents through the air into a front-end loader with some help from an elf.
There also are more than 200 other displays, including The Twelve Days of Christmas, which features 12 individual scenes and Dinosaur Village with its six impressive dinosaurs, complete with an erupting volcano. The Sea of Illumination presented by Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies, Gatlinburg also is a must-see, as it lights up the entire frontstretch grandstand area during the drive-through.
Speedway In Lights features more than two million lights along the 4.5-mile drive-through route, which includes a lap around the World's Fastest Half-Mile and a trip through Bristol Dragway.
Subway Christmas Village, located in the BMS infield, also is a highlight for any visitor to the light show. Children can have their pictures taken with Santa, get some hot chocolate, roast marshmallows and enjoy several carnival rides. New this year is a two-story merry-go-round that is 35 feet in diameter and accommodates up to 75 at one time. Crafts and food vendors also will be part of Christmas Village.
Proceeds from Autotrader.com Speedway In Lights Powered by TVA benefit the Bristol Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities, a non-profit foundation dedicated to distributing funds to qualified children's charities. Funds from the foundation directly aid children in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. To date, Speedway Children's Charities has raised well in excess of $4.5 million for area agencies.
