Nearly 2,500 runners and walkers took part in Sunday’s Subway Speedway In Lights 5k at Bristol Motor Speedway with David Cheromei and Danielle Alfano taking top honors.

The 33-year-old Cheromei, a native of Kenya now living in Damascus, Va., captured his second SIL win in three tries with a time of 15:53. Cheromei also has the event record with a time of 15:21, recorded in 2010 at the inaugural event.

Running in her first SIL 5k Alfano, 23, crossed the finish line on the backstretch of BMS in 19:01. The former King College runner who hails from Chattanooga was thrilled with the win – but also happy about taking home the top prize.

“I really don’t run in a lot of 5k events,” said Alfano. “But I really wanted to win this one. I wasn’t thrilled with my time… I feel like I could have beat that by about 30 seconds but it’s good to win.

“I love racing and when I saw what you could win I was excited about being part of it. I like Dale Earnhardt so I’m really happy about being able to be here for the races next year.”

Both Alfano and Cheromei won a pair of suite seats for both the March and August NASCAR race weekends at BMS in 2013, along with passes to Speedway In Lights.

Peter Dalton took home second place in the male overall category with a time of 16:08 and won tickets to both the Food City 500 and IRWIN Tools Night Race, as did women’s runner-up Grace White (20:18). Food City 500 tickets went to third-place finishers Dalton Hudlow (17:26) and Maci Shell (20:47).
