While parents line the creek at Bristol Motor Speedway cheering for their rubber sharks to cross the finish line first, their children will have numerous activities of their own to keep them entertained at the Kids Expo, part of the Fourth Annual Sharky 500 at BMS Oct. 1.

Kids Expo features free games, displays and much more leading up to the Sharky 500, a Speedway Children’s Charities rubber shark race that raises funds for agencies in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.

A number of activities will be held at the Kid’s Expo, including pumpkin decorating, cornhole, arts and crafts and a big wheel drag race. Kids also will be able to bounce in an inflatable playland, climb the YMCA Rock Wall and put their skills to the test with putt-putt.

The Sullivan County Animal Shelter will be in attendance with dogs and cats for adoption, while the Bristol, Tenn. Police Department will have a bomb handling robot on display. The Bristol, Tenn. Fire Department will feature a fire truck display and fire extinguisher training, and the Wellmont One medical helicopter will be on hand for kids to see. Hula Hoop contests, temporary tattoos, face painting and much more also highlight the event.

Live entertainment will be provided by Daisi Rain, a local youth band which recently opened for Jerrod Niemann during Knoxville’s Tennessee Valley Fair. Seven-year-old Carson Peters, a fiddle-playing sensation, also will take to the stage to amaze the crowd with his fiddle skills.

Kids also will be able to have their photos made with Sharky and Sharkette from Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies.

The Kids Expo will take place from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., while the Sharky 500 is set for 1 p.m.

The shark race will take place on Beaver Creek between the Speedway and Bristol Dragway. The sharks will be released simultaneously into the creek with the first ones across the finish line scoring some amazing prizes, including the 2011 Ford Mustang GT BMS pace car (valued at more than $32,000), provided by Tri-Cities Ford Dealers. Second-place is $5,000 in merchandise from Grand Home Furnishings, while the third-place shark will win its owner four tickets to anywhere American Airlines flies in the United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Winners do not have to be present in order to claim their prizes. Sharks are $10 each and there is no limit on the number an individual can purchase. Sharks will be available for purchase at the event until 15 minutes before the sharks are dropped.

The sharks are available online at www.bristol.speedwaycharities.org, as well as the Bristol Motor Speedway ticket office, all Tri-Cities Grand Home Furnishing locations and all Pizza Plus locations.
