Bristol Is Bristol
It was a historic weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. It was historic in my mind because it was the first (and hopefully not the last) time the stars of Global RallyCross clashed inside the Last Great Colosseum. Although the NASCAR drivers Travis Pastrana and Nelson Piquet Jr. couldn't compete since they were in Chicago, these X-Games stars were beatin' and bangin' in a manner that would make Earnhardt proud. At the conclusion of the final, tattered GRC Supercars left the Colosseum on rollbacks while others limped out with front-ends and fenders missing.
The second portion of the Saturday doubleheader didn't disappoint in the carnage department. Most fans would say that's to be expected when eight Monster Trucks come to Bristol to put a little "thunder" in Thunder Valley. Local driver Randy Moore brought the crowd to their feet when he turned his famous War Wizard machine on it's side during the freestyle portion of the competition. Stone Crusher matched War Wizard's performance when he ended his freestyle time early after tipping over his truck.
It was a phenomenal event that brought new fans to our venue. One major takeaway I had from the event was the fact that Bristol is Bristol regardless of the event. What I mean by that statement is the essence of Bristol came through during our Global RallyCross event and Monster Truck show in similar fashion that our NASCAR weekends produces. Fans wearing Bigfoot shirts and rocking flatbrim Ken Block hats saw the same excitement Junior Nation fans are accustomed to experiencing when the NASCAR circuit rolls in to Bristol Motor Speedway.
This weekend created new Bristol fans after visiting our Bullring for the first time. It also made Bristol veterans like myself jacked up for August Race week. It'll be the next time we see modern day gladiators swapping paint inside the Last Great Colosseum. I only have 30 days to wait until we see which drivers will be involved in the next Bristol Battle.
Hopefully you'll be able to join us to feel the electric atmosphere our fans create when tempers flare in Bristol. This weekend served as a taste of what to expect in August and I honestly can't wait to see what happens next!
