Casey Mears earned the pole for Saturday’s IRWIN Tools Night Race, thanks not to a fast qualifying lap, but a fast lap during Friday morning’s Sprint Cup Series practice session at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Inclement weather canceled pole qualifying for the IRWIN Tools Night Race. The 20th Anniversary Food City 250 is slated to roll off later this evening.

“It’s exciting for us,” a smiling Mears said. “For Germain Racing, it’s been a long couple of years. It’s a big shot in the arm for our team for sure.”

“We were pretty embarrassed about how we showed up here last time. We unloaded way better than we did here last time and race trim felt pretty good as well. We were about fifteen or so, made a substantial adjustment and shot to the top of the board.

“It’s going to be good. Starting up front at Bristol period is always a good thing. And it’s exciting for our team to be able to have this opportunity, to have the first pit selection, starting up toward the front. It gives us a big head start from where we’ve been in the past.”

Brad Keselowski, winner of the last two Cup races at BMS, will start on the outside pole, followed by Greg Biffle, Joey Logano, Aric Almirola, Jeff Burton, Paul Menard, Denny Hamlin, Marcos Ambrose and Kyle Busch. Other notables include Jeff Gordon (11th), Kevin Harvick (13th), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (16th) and Tony Stewart (21st).
