NASCAR returns to Northeast Tennessee for the crown jewel Bass Pro Shops Night Race, September 11-13, 2025, and for hard-core fans who love to pop the tailgate and fire up the grill on location, there are many options for organized pre-game social gatherings at Bristol Motor Speedway. Whether you're a seasoned tailgater or a first-timer, we've got everything you need know to make the most of your NASCAR tailgating experience at the World’s Fastest Half-Mile.
From the roar of the first engines on track to the sizzle of the steaks and chicken grilling on the barbecue, tailgating at Bristol Motor Speedway is a longstanding tradition. Here's your ultimate guide to turning race weekend into memories that will last a lifetime.
Top Tailgating Tips
Arrive Early, Stay Late
Plan to arrive before the gates open each day to set up in the best possible spot and soak in all the energy. If you have purchased parking or camping, it is always recommended to get there early so you can get a great spot and get your fun activities underway. Once the racing is over, plan to stay a little later to avoid congestion outside the racetrack. Also, please don’t leave any tents set up in your spot or trash lying around.
Know Where to Park
BMS offers several lots for purchased parking. For super-serious tailgaters there is also the Swaggerty’s Farm Tailgate Zone, which provides guests with double parking spaces for one great price. That way you can park your vehicle in one space and then put all your tables, chairs and tailgate setup in the other. With 100 spaces available in the Swaggerty’s Farm Tailgate Zone there’s plenty of room for all the serious tailgaters to gather in one location. Tailgating is allowed in all of BMS parking lots and campgrounds. Guests are advised to remain in their parking spot and to keep all lanes around them open for traffic.
Bring the Heat to the Party
Gas-powered Grills are welcome and so is charcoal for those who prefer fire-lit grills. Stock up on all your favorite meats, and your top-secret recipe rubs. Don't forget your meat thermometer, by the way.
Pick the Menu
Part of the fun is selecting what to serve. Burgers, hot dogs, BBQ and chicken are classic choices. Don’t forget the buns. You can also break out the slow cookers to make some fun items like chili, meatballs, pulled pork, sloppy joes or bbq beef. Chips and dip, some pasta or potato salad and coleslaw also adds to the fun. Have some cookies and brownies for dessert. All of these items and more can be found at your local Food City store on your way to the track.
Stay Cool and Hydrated
September is creeping into the fall in Northeast Tennessee, but it can still be quite warm. Bring coolers with plenty of ice, water, and your favorite beverages (please, cans only, no glass bottles). Pro tip: Freeze water bottles to double as ice packs and hydration later.
Tailgate Tunes / Seating and Chairs
Set the vibe with your favorite playlist or race-themed mix. Be courteous and respectful to your neighbors and don’t crank it up too loud. Bring some folding chairs and folding tables and maybe even a tent or canopy. Just remember to remain in your own spot and don’t sprawl out into other’s areas.
Game On and Show off that Team Spirit
You can bring some games along like the always fun Cornhole, or bring a football or a beachball to toss around to pass the time between practice, qualifying or races. Maybe some racing or sports trivia contests. Don’t forget some kid-friendly games too. You will also want to wear your favorite team gear so you can cheer on your favorite driver or race team. Have some prizes on hand for the winners.
Keep it Clean
Bring plenty of trash bags and cleaning supplies to leave your spot better than you found it. Let's keep Tennessee beautiful y’all!
Safety First
Tailgating behind your vehicle is permitted but taking up the space adjacent to you is not, unless of course you are tailgating in the spacious Swaggerty’s Farm Tailgate Zone. Tailgating accessories (i.e. cooler, pop-ups and grills) must not be left unattended. Tailgating in the parking lot aisle ways is permitted, but safety vehicles must be able to make their way through the parking lots. You may be asked to remove your setup in order for a vehicle to get through. Remember you are tailgating in an active parking lot so be aware of other cars and parking attendants in your area. Stay safe and have fun!
Surprise and Delights
Keep an eye out for Bristol Motor Speedway staff members or members of the media who may be stopping by to do a quick story about your experience. Food City representatives also have a tradition of naming the Tailgater of the Race. You never know, well-behaved guests and guests with the best setups may be lucky enough to receive gifts or prizes for your efforts.
